The process of creating a premium cannabis vape experience — from beginning to end — for the ultimate high

What makes for a true premium cannabis oil experience? “It’s all about the grow — it’s where the magic happens,” says Sean Corrigan of W Vapes. “As far as genetics go, the real key to great cannabis is great genetics, so you want to start out with a good strain by seed or clone.” Corrigan, during a recent cultivation tour of W Vapes in Las Vegas, walked TheModern.news through what is essentially a six-step process from seed to oil to create a premium cannabis vape experience for the ultimate high:

Popping seeds

It starts at the seeds. “It’s like having 2,000 kids. The father and mother plants are crossed, and they produce the seeds, where each strain has different characteristics,” Corrigan says. During this step, W Vapes strives to find the seeds with the highest amount of potency, terpenes, yield and ones with the most resistance to mildew and bugs.

Then a branch is cut off a strain, and a hormone or cloning gel is used to clone the plant to stay consistent. It’s about two weeks in the cloning machine to pop roots. Then the clone is planted in rockwool cubes, a common hydroponic medium where there are no nutrients. It’s a blank medium with coconut fibers and other fibrous materials.

Vegetate plants

Plants are grown, or vegetated, for about four weeks — it’s the growth period before fruits and flowers are grown from the plants. Cannabis is unique in that it doesn’t produce buds or flowers until you change the light cycle to 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness. It mimics the natural growing season, and the light cycle induces the flowering cycle.

During this eight to nine weeks, the amounts of nutrients are altered frequently to optimize the amount of buds, potency and terpenes. Curing

Cured? The curing process is like aging a wine or something similar to that, Corrigan says. “It brings out the full essence of the terpenes, flavors and smells that we’re looking for in the plants.” For W Vapes’ pre-rolls, the cured buds are then ground down and rolled into pre-rolls.

The machines turn the powder into a liquid (the oil). CO2 is pumped into the plant material to pull out any of the essential oils (cannabinoids — CBDs, THCs, CBNs) and terpenes for the flavors and smells.

Terpenes go through post-processing to refine them. Cannabinoids also go through post-processing to refine them for W Vapes’ pens. One process is called “winterization” — dissolving the crude oil and ethanol, then that mixture is frozen to separate the fats, lipids and chlorophyll from the oil by filtering to extract the undesirables.

Distillation

Finally, it’s the distillation process, which is the key to the quality and clarity of W Vapes’ oils. Distillation is boiling off and re-condensing compounds that W Vapes is looking to distill. The refined oil is mixed with the refined terpene that already has been fraction off … and, voila! The oils are ready for W Vapes pens.

Extraction
